Vision impaired and legally blind aren’t the same as blind. They can play WoW because it allows add ons. He wants to be able to use add ons in Everquest, he’s not asking Sony to fix it as much as he is asking them to allow it to be fixed. What he’s asking for is the equivalent of being able to change the font to a larger size so it is more visible.
Maybe Jason should go work with some handicapped people and find out what their side is.
I can’t believe that in this day and age this is something that wouldn’t be thought of. I realize that every situation can’t be thought of but this seems like something that game developers should think of.
When more of the game developers are pushing into their late forties and fifties their own eyesight will help them think of it.
I feel like I’m entitled to a higher quality WANC podcast. I realize there are other podcasts available but that doesn’t matter. If the WANC corporation had any money I’d consider suing.

And who put together the Everquest for the visually impaired? It surprised me to hear something like that on WANC on account of the fact that it was pretty good.
AntiWanc-It’s good to want things!
Carl, I have worked with disabled people. While at DeVry I was responsible for setting up lab equipment and helping visually impaired students access the tools that every other student had at their disposal. It is not a complete lack of empathy here.
I do believe it would be good for Sony to allow this to be done. I do not believe that it is a matter they should be sued for. Blizzard accommodates your needs and Sony doesn’t, so stick with Blizzard. Boycott Sony, create a public outcry against them, whatever. But sue them?
How better to create a public outcry than to sue someone?
AntiWANC – I did the Everquest for the visually impaired. I came up with the idea while editing and just did it on the fly. Sorry you’re not enjoying the rest. Hopefully your meds will kick in soon and you can start enjoying the show again.
Doz – Personally, I have less sympathy toward a cause when their first line of recourse is litigation. I might have been more inclined to side with him had he just gone to the media or even started yet another Facebook cause rallying a million people to join. As it stands, he’s actually put at least some people on the side of the Sony megacorp.
It clearly states in the article that he tried numerous times to contact Sony but was ignored. Ignoring customers is bad business.
I think you’re letting your perception of litigation prejudice you against it. When you have laws requiring certain accommodations the end recourse you have when institutions will not follow those rules on their own is litigation. That’s our system of checks that prevent the majority from oppressing the minority, the judiciary. Denouncing people for the “base” activity of turning to the judiciary for redress is rather ignoring the entire function of the judiciary. Maybe we should lose respect for people who support certain politicians by going to the poll and voting rather than just gathering support on facebook.
I would bet that in the vast majority of cases of people suing for such things have gone to the companies involved and sought some sort of fix only to be turned away. Companies most likely find themselves in that position through their own misdeeds, not the misdeeds of the people suing them.
Okay the V review was .. interesting but I’ve come to expect rambling and tangents from you guys so I’m not surprised. Any thoughts of if the show is good enough to survive the 3 month hiatus they are putting it on after next episode ( which has nothing to do with ratings and everything to do with holidays and olympics apparently)
Fine. I’m going to go ahead and concede this point with the understanding that if I ever lose the use of my hands, I’m suing the porn industry so that I can have court-mandated handjobs to compensate for my disability.
I saw an interview in which they said they only shot 4 episodes of V and they were waiting to see the ratings before doing more. This makes it similar to the mini-series way the original started. I’m guessing they’ll reveal a full Visitor au naturale tonight.
If there are similar games (WoW?) that allow add-ons that make them more accessible I can understand the lawsuit. Asking a company to do research and change their technology is going too far. I know someone with one arm that can play most video games that was pissed (well jealous) that he can’t play Guitar Hero. Should he sue as well? Are they going to need to make a wheelchair adapter for the Wii Fit?
And Mike, I think you’ll be out of luck. The porn industry just supplies the viewing material. What a person does with their hands (or lack of) isn’t their problem.
Mike, there’s already an app for that.

Or one of these might be easier with no hands:

The real trick is getting your insurance to cover it.
Well, if the guy is just vision impaired and not actually blind as suggested in the first paragraph (“It’s not uncommon for blind gamers to feel invisible …”), couldn’t he just get a bigger monitor?
Ummm noooooo. He might be color blind he may have just partial vision.A bigger monitor would not help those.
He probably already has a big monitor. Since all I could do is guess about what helps him play, I suggest that you contact him and interview him about what he wants from the video game industry to make them more accessible.
Nah. He’d probably make us redesign the website to make it more accessible to him … only to make us change it back after listening to the podcast.
